UMMC Doctor Builds Ventilator with Available Hardware

A UMMC doctor has come up with an innovative solution to the shortage of ventilators, according to a Clarion-Ledger article.

Dr. Charles Robertson, an assistant professor of anesthesiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has designed a ventilator that uses parts from the hardware store, and about 170 of them have already been assembled, according to a UMMC press release. His homemade versions will be used if there’s a shortage of standard ventilators at UMMC.

“I was watching the coronavirus spread in China during January, then by the time February came and cases started increasing in South Korea, Italy and Iran, I knew it was coming to the United States, and that if enough people became sick, we may not have enough ventilators,” Robertson said.

The ventilator uses a garden hose, a lamp timer, and an electronic valve, costing less than $100 in total. The ventilator is named the Robertson Ventilator, after its inventor.
