Tech Jobs in Southern Cities? Thank the Auto Industry

A new Brookings Institution report finds Jackson, Miss., and Nashville match San Francisco in employment gains.

By Eric Morath. Jackson, Miss., and Nashville, Tenn., may be better known for Southern lifestyles than tech jobs, but those regions are adding “advanced industry” jobs at near the same rate as the San Francisco area.

From 2013 to 2015, the Nashville metro area led the nation with 7.9% increased employment in sectors using science, technology, engineering or math skills, according to a Brookings Institution report released Thursday. The Washington think tank examined the 100 largest metro areas.

The tech-rich Bay Area was a close second, followed by Jackson with 7.6% growth.\
