Mississippi Startup Awarded National Grant for Media Innovation

Founders of local podcasting company receive competitive grant for media innovation

JACKSON, Miss. –  Local entrepreneurs Beau York and Briar Bowser received national recognition this week for their company SATCHEL as the Knight Foundation released its first round of 2016 Prototype Fund winners.

The Knight Prototype Fund, which was established in 2012, provides financial support, mentorship and training for news and media innovators to bring ideas from concept to demo.

Through Satchel, the team seeks to advance podcasting as an industry and bring talk radio to the on-demand digital market. The forthcoming Satchel Podcast Player will make podcasts easier to find through location-based search and allow people to share content through an embedded player on social media.

York comes from a background in telecommunications and has been working in new media for over two years with his company PODASTERY. His portfolio includes LET’S TALK JACKSON, a local podcast focused on Mississippi’s artists, activists, entrepreneurs, musicians and more.

York will be releasing a documentary-styled podcast following the story of himself and two additional fund winners from across the country. The podcast titled “Prototype” is set to launch in April.
