Jeff: Extraordinary execution of ordinary idea essential

In one of Innovate Mississippi’s training sessions, we ask this question to participants: “Which is more likely to be successful? An extraordinary idea with ordinary execution or extraordinary execution of an ordinary idea?”

Since all we focus on at Innovate Mississippi is the development of innovation-based ventures — which are hopefully based on extraordinary ideas — this question often throws people for a loop. I’m sure they are thinking “This has to be a trick question. Surely Innovate Mississippi wants me to say that an extraordinary idea is the important part.” The right answer, though, is that extraordinary execution of an ordinary idea has proven over and over to be much more valuable than extraordinary ideas alone.
